Hey Tori!

Great question… and one that’s hard to answer :) My rate is different for every story I do, since they’re all based on project fees. I never go *below* $50/ hour, but I usually make a lot more than that. For example, I write a column and my rate for that work maps out to about $200/hour. However, I also get paid $50/ science news story for another client, and that takes an hour, so I’m getting paid $50/ hour for that work. The rest of my projects tend to vary between those two markers.

My goal in the coming year is to actually track all of the hourly break down + hours of non-billable work (which I try to keep to a minimum — I don’t do a lot of pitching, so most of my non-billable hours are business and accounting maintenance). I’ll keep you posted about what my average hourly rate really is after a few months of that tracking!
