A few months ago, I was feeling panicked about making enough money. Two weeks later, we surpassed our financial goals for the month.

I want to spend some time today telling you that story as a case study.

Like many of you, my business has been funky in 2024. I made over half of my income writing product reviews in 2023; jump to January 2024 and my inbox was crickets. None of my editors were assigning work. I started to panic.

I’d also been very clear with my coach, my therapist, and the people around me that I wanted to step away from product reviewing in 2024, at least as the focus of my career (keeping only a few key clients). Instead, I wanted to prioritize coaching. And, as my therapist said: Be careful what you wish for.

As mid-February rolled around, I began to realize that my waiting wasn’t going to pay off. Despite giving editors over a month to “figure out their budgets,” my revenue numbers from the writing side of my business remained scarily low. A few of my clients dropped their rates in half. One decided to “fire” me because I worked with an assistant. Finally, I felt my system kick into action: I realized that this old way of working wasn’t working. I had to figure out some kind of solution.

My coach suggested that instead of panicking, I might be able to bridge the $6,000 revenue gap I was looking at in February by creating something within my coaching business. She urged me to ask what my ideal clients needed right now, and to create a…
